Windows is automatically installed with lots of software and features
that are not always useful or needed. You can optimize your system,
making it faster and saving hard drive space, by disabling the
stuff you're not using. Here's how you do it:
Windows 7:
1. Click the Windows button at the bottom left and then click Control Panel.
2. Click on the Programs and Features icon.
3. Then click the "Enable or disable Windows features on or off" link.
4. The list of features of the system is displayed. Uncheck the boxes of
the items you want to disable. For instance, you can uncheck the box
in front of optional components for Tablet PC if you do not have a
Tablet PC, or Windows Gadget Platform if you don't use or plan on using
gadgets on your desktop.
6. Finally, click on the OK button at any time you can re-checking features and return them in their previous state.
Windows Vista:
1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
2. Click on the Programs icon.
3. Then click the Enable or disable Windows features of the Programs and Features heading.
4. Click the Continue button.
5. The list of features of the system is displayed. Uncheck the boxes of
the items you want to disable. For instance, you can uncheck the box
in front of optional components for Tablet PC if you do not have a
Tablet PC, or DFS Replication Service Windows if you do not need to
synchronize files between multiple computers, etc.
6. Finally, click on the OK button at any time you can re-checking features and return them in their previous state.
All Other Windows Versions:
1. Click the Start button and then Settings > Control Panel.
2. Click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. Now click Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. The list of default Windows features is listed. You can disable the
ones you don't need. For me, I disabled MSN Explorer, Message Queuing,
Fax Services, and MSN Messenger, just to name a few.
6. Finally, click on the Next button to save your changes....
